New all age comics for February 17, 2016

New comic book day this week yields a really good crop of fantasy comics including two Jim Henson creations, Princeless Raven Pirate Princess and Usagi Yojimbo. That last title is one of our favorites for people that are looking for a low key, black and white, utterly creative and fun title about a ninja rabbit in feudal Japan.

There are also lots of staple humor titles like Lumberjanes, Simpsons Comics and Adventure Time. Science fiction is loaded down with two Doctor Whos, 11th and 10th Doctor thank you very much, our 6 year old’s favorite comic-Skylanders Superchargers, a Star Wars and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trade paperback that’s just for the kids.

With superheroes this week the go-to name for most people is released. Teen Titans Go! #14 comes out and this title is just like the cartoon, in a good way.

What a fun week for all age comics. #4 of Zodiac Starforce comes out. This is great for the girls who want to see action, battles, learn about teamwork and good fun. It also sounds like the name of a roller rink circa 1976. There are a couple Turtle titles including a $1 greatest hits that is great for people who want to learn about them or dig a classic story.

All age comics, doctor who, spongebob, Scooby doo, young reader

Jonesy #1 is about a teen who is trying to figure out life, navigate school, difficult musical choices and of course-love. The twist is that she has the power to make two people fall in love.  Scooby Doo Where Are You, Spongebob Comics, Doctor Who 10th Year 2 #2 comes out this week also.

New all age comics for January 20, 2016

What does your young reader want? There are all age comics for any reader and this week marks a lots of books for them (or you…) to dive into head first. The sci-fi fandom can celebrate two Star Wars, one Star Trek, a couple Doctor Who books and Lumberjanes; which falls between categories to an extent, but is one of the best all age comics being printed today. Superheroes can rest easy with Marvel Universe Avengers Assemble Season Two #15 and a classic Batman story featuring Ra’s Al Ghul’s first appearance.

For our purposes, Animation also includes video games. This is a massive category and a chance for kids to read about what they really want to read about. Your kids play Skylanders? If they watch Adventure Time, The Simpsons, Transformers or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or others then there is a comic coming out this week that is right up their alley.

The Fables is the stuff of middle Earth and their counterparts. Jim Henson’s Storyteller Dragons #2 and Usagi Yojimbo #151 are out this week. Due to the bigger words and story, Storyteller Dragons is great for kids 10 and up. The art in this book is amazing and is our personal favorite now. Usagi Yojimbo is great for 6 and older; but the younger ages probably won’t want to read it. It’s the story of a anthropomorphic ninja rabbit in Japan and each issue has great action and a really great story. This is one of our go-to comics and kids who like something different, but oh-so excellent, will relish the experience and come back to this title over and over.

New all age comics for January 13, 2016

Happy new comic book day and this week is packed, jammed I say with fabulous books for the all age comics reader. There are two Adventure Time comics, #48 and a special graphic novel Sugary Shorts, Volume 2. Back to the Future #4, the ongoing series, three Doctor Who’s, two Walt Disney Comics (Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse) and two My Little Pony titles hit this week.

We decided to add Doctor Who to our list of all age comics. It’s the sci-fi element that finally made us accept it as a book that any age can get behind. Younger readers may not want to read it as the title is darker than some, but its content is good for ages 9 and up.

Our 6 year olds current favorite comic, Skylanders Supchargers #4 from IDW is better than you expect it. This is a great title if your kids play the video game because there is already built in interest. They’ll want to read it to follow along with the character that they already like. That’s what’s great about your kids reading comics-and there is almost certainly something that will register with them.

Spongebob Comics #52 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Amazing Adventures are two go-to titles for young readers. Both of these comics track closely to their comic counterpart in an all age appropriate way.

Where is your closest comic book store? Just dig into the comic shop locator and type in your zip code. The affiliate links will take you to TFAW, where you’ll save up to 20% on your books. Comics, good. Saving money on comics, great.

Happy New Year-the first #NCBD is nigh or at least near and there are lots of options for readers this week. One of our top 10 graphic novels for 2015 is released this week, Age of Reptiles: Ancient Egyptians. The individual comics came out last year and this series is wordless, features beautiful art and good for ages 8 and up.

Two newer video game comics hit this week also, Skylanders Superchargers #3 and Angry Birds #1. Skylanders Superchargers is the favorite comic for our 6 year old now. He loves the fact that he can read along to the characters that he controls in the game. The content is OK for any age and is surprisingly good.

It’s a double shot for My Little Pony too with Friendship is Magic #38 and Friends Forever #24. Two groovy independent titles that you’ll want to look out for, Invader Zim #6 and Hero Cats #9 are worth looking at also. The first is great sci-fi for any age and the second blends the world of cats with action, great story and a narrative that kids will enjoy following.

There are also a couple new Doctor Who comics. These comics aren’t bad for younger readers, it just that the vocabulary might be over their head. However, if you’ve got a child that is into Doctor Who you can pick up any of these to further the adventures of time and space.

Star Wars received the Golden Book treatment-and that’s OK. Some fans hit out that the franchise went that direction. Spoiler alert: any age wants something to do with Star Wars and the Golden Books are perfect for young readers or those who you’re reading good night books to.

The last new comic book day of 2015 and publishers are taking it easy on the all age comic crowd. The Best All Age Graphic Novels in 2015

2015 was a very good year for some of the all age comics. As a result there were some great graphic novels that collected those comic books. This is our list of the ten all age comics that we liked the best. It’s a good mix of classic books, new characters, art and publishers. Of course this list can’t include all of them, but we wanted to include some of the ones that you know about, as well as, a couple that probably flew under your radar.

If we were to include two more to our list it would certainly be Princeless Volume 4: Be Yourself and Mickey Mouse: The Mysterious Crystal Ball. Princeless is an action driven comic with a girl lead about vampires, royalty, monsters and fighting while Mickey has some of his classic stories that are printed on their new comic home of IDW. Big thanks to Previews World for offering up these two graphic novels to be given away.

Age of Reptiles, Ancient Egyptians

Similar to Mouse Guard, except wordless with gorgeous art that makes you want to slowly turn each page as you follow these massive beasts around. Some of the art is bloody and might be too much for younger readers, but kids 10 and up who are down with dinosauria will absolutely love this.

Ghostbusters Get Real

Ghostbusters is a great comic for any age. It’s got good memories for older readers, good vocabulary for younger readers and art that anyone will enjoy.

Lumberjanes

This is the comic for kids who are looking for something fresh, original and something that you (especially girls) can relate to. With great art, clever stories and dialogue that will make anyone laugh this series is as good as comics for any audience get.

Jin Henson’s Storyteller Witches

Storyteller Witches had some of the best story and art of any book this past year. It’s not graphic or for adults, but it’s story is sometimes dark and might not interest younger readers. However, for kids 9 and up who like great art and clever stories this collection of four stand alone stories is fabulous.

Mouse Guard, Legends of the Guard, Volume 3

The story of mice gathering in a local bar to tell stories doesn’t sound like much on the surface. It’s the art and the story that made Mouse Guard one of the most enjoyable books of the past year for us.

Peanuts

Pick a Peanuts any Peanuts. Almost every printed story from them has been re-published in the past year. However, pay attention to the graphic novels that collect the new comic books. They have new stories, the same classic art and characters that feel fresh and still tell great stories.

Planet Gigantic

Similar to the above title, the plight of a brother and sister who are stranded on a planet isn’t engaging on the surface. However, mix in a bit of pulp/noir feel, action, just a shade of unpredictability and family and you’ve got a great graphic novel for any age.

Regular Show

Take the wit from the Regular Show on television, write new episodes and put them straight to comics and this is what you’ve got.

Simpsons Comic Explosion

In theory any Simpson’s graphic novel could make this list. If you’re only familiar with the television show then do yourself a favor and dig into any of their graphic novels.

Terrible Lizard

The premise of a teen girl with a pet dinosaur is cliché, but this book rocks. All of the characters have wit and the art is real, comic and fun. Fun-you and kids will have a kick reading this book.
