In My Heart, A Book of Feelings has a very happy cover. One could almost say that it draws you in. Certainly part of that feeling, pardon the pun, are the heart shapes that get smaller as you look at them. The hearts cut into the middle of each page is part of the charm of In My Heart, but the words and illustrations on the pages are what make this a book about feelings that any age can relate to.

Dan Krall appeared on our radar a couple years ago with Oh, Nuts!, the story about squirrels competing for attention in a metropolitan zoo. His next book, The Great Lollipop Caper about a lollipop trying to become as popular to adults as a caper was one of our favorite books of 2013. We still read that book a couple times a week to our children and laugh. Sick Simon is his latest and continues his streak of books that are as enjoyable for the parents to read as it is for the children to read or look at.

Our criteria for a great good-night book are that it should be short enough to read a couple of times and have great illustrations. If it has rhyming words in it then it’s bonus. The Monsterator by Keith Graves meets all of those and more. It was immediately enjoyed by everyone in the house for several reasons.

LeapFrog Letter Factory Adventures: Counting on Lemonade continues the re-opened factory with Leap and pals teaching preschoolers about basic concepts. LeapFrog has done math in a couple of previous releases including Math Adventure to the Moon, Numberland and Numbers Away. Counting on Lemonade spends a little too much time on the plot, but once it gets down to education it is much better than its predecessors.

“Play the singing one!” is a rallying cry I hear from the back seat at least once a day. “The singing one” is what our oldest son calls the recent Spanish language CD, Sabor! by Whistlefritz. Whenever I feign ignorance of the CD he is quick to prompt me by saying, ‘you know the one with the panda and mouse on it’. It’s good when your toddler is so specific, isn’t it? We’re big fans of Whistlefritz and the way they present foreign languages. The songs are kid-catchy, have lots of choruses that repeat and all of the vocabulary is in the liner notes.

At the risk of an overused pun, Greek mythology is well, Greek to me. I know somewhere there’s a pillar of salt, a hydra, Hercules and Aquaman is in there somewhere, I think. Mini Myths is a new board book series of the classic Greek myths re-imagined as modern stories for toddlers. The words on these preschool books are big, the concepts are simple and the art will draw in young readers aged 1-4.

Our criteria for a great bed time story is that it’s simple enough for kids to read, or have assistance reading and be read multiple times without annoying the parent. Little Elliot, Big City is a good example of this description. It’s the simple story about an elephant that doesn’t quite fit in, until he finds someone else who doesn’t quite fit in. We’re part of the Little Elliot, Big City Blog Tour and had the chance to pose some questions to its author, Mike Curato.
