Book review: I’d Know You Anywhere, My Love by Nancy Tillman

The art of the children’s book is creating something that kids and adults can enjoy.  In reality, it’s never just one book.  The first book is upbeat and manic, while the second book has a more leisurely pace.  Some children’s books will straddle the middle area, like some of Sondra Boynton’s and some will plant their flag in the second category.  I’d Know You Anywhere, My Love by Nancy Tillman firmly sticks it in the second category, with its escapist, fun to read lines and  lush, surreal illustrations. Momagers, mom and dad to the job interview are red flags for life

If the article weren’t in The Wall Street Journal I would swear that it came from The Onion.  The title of the article, Should You Bring Mom and Dad to The Job Interview is about how Millennials are bringing their parents to the workplace.  Cue blood boiling at the headline, stupid weak Millennials, I say in my grumpy old man voice.  However, one of the stories isn’t all bad. On My Way to Bed is silly, bedtime story fun for kids

A good bedtime story has two ways to look at it:  it’s fun for the children to hear and it’s fun for the parents to read.  That’s our go-to rule for bedtime stories.  If it meets both of those criteria then it’s bound to be something that will last for a long time.  On My Way to Bed is the silly, brightly illustrated story about Livi creatively avoiding bedtime. The Pocket Hose review: cheap design and easily broken

I have an unwritten rule:  Never, ever buy anything that I see “As Seen on TV”.  If that product makes it to the store, then I might give it a shot.  Enter the Pocket Hose, it seems logical that it should work, my traditional hose is heavy and this is only $20, so I’ll give it a shot.  Alas, this pocket hose review does not have a happy ending as two of them broke within one week of use. The Bunker-an awesome twisty, noir, time traveling apocalypse story

I read the first issue of The Bunker and didn’t review it.  In a way it was like the episode in Star Trek where they first meet the Borg or the let’s kill Hitler episode of Doctor Who.  It’s was so imaginative, creative, weird and yet so relatable that you almost wished you hadn’t seen it so that you could watch it for the first time again.  I wanted to wait until The Bunker #2 came out to review it, just to see if it could match the level of the first issue.  Continue reading The Bunker-an awesome twisty, noir, time traveling apocalypse story

Curious about critters? Win an #OrkinMan Education Kit & Flashlight

Our previous house was built around 1910.  It had heart of pine wood throughout, original windows and spaces where the floor and walls weren’t joined tightly.  That was all the space needed for bugs of all sort to come in and explore.  If I had the Orkin Home Education Kit then I could’ve identified the many small pests and critters that were trying to meet me. Awkward questions from children: Daddy, what’s in your willy?

The many questions that a 4 year old asks are the stuff of legend.  Sometimes the questions from children will be earnest and straight forward.  It’s those other times when your children ask questions that are unexpected, innocent or just downright weird. Continue reading Awkward questions from children: Daddy, what’s in your willy?
