New all age comic books for July 19, 2017

It’s the weekend, let’s head out to the local comic book store and dig into the new all age comic books. Where is your closest comic book store? Just type in your zip code and you’ll be directed to one that is most likely within 10 miles of your home. This week has some jamming new all age comic books from the finicky art kid, tween movie adaptation purist, Whovians to superhero in tights folks and more. Here are 5 cool all age comic books that are good for ages 5 and up.

Simspsons Comics

Simpsons Comics is so consistently great that it might fly under your radar. Some of the humor might not resonate with kids younger than 9 on all of the stories, but they’ll love the colors, as well as the pacing of the comic book. Each issue usually comes with two to three stories that are silly and laugh out loud funny. In Simpsons Comics #240 Homer falls head first into the adult coloring book fad. It’s a touch Alice in Woderland and very, very funny for ages 10 and up.

Pink Panther Pink Anniversary

Pink Panther Pink Anniversary is one for the fans, but those fans-for the television show and comic book are 5 and up. This is one for the fans as it celebrates Pink through since his premier in 1971. If this issue is like the other then it will feature new stories, mixed in with classic ones. While the art difference might disappoint some parents kids will laugh as you read it to them or let them have some read alone time.

Batman/TMNT Adventures

If you didn’t pick up one of the best new all age comic books when it came out in individual issues this is your chance. Batman/TMNT Adventures collects all five issues from this fabulous mini-series that has Bats teaming up with some heroes in a half shell. What this mini-series does so well it that it pairs action and plot-in an all age comic book friendly format that neither young readers nor established comic book fans will pay any mind to it. This is fabulous story telling with action and more that ages 5 and up will love.

War For The Planet of the Apes novel

So, your tween wants to see War For The Planet of the Apes? It’s rated PG-13 and it’s on the harder edge of that rating, use your own judgment parents. When I was a tween and low teen kid my parents wouldn’t let me see R rated films, so I read the books. Name a book and they’ve got a movie novelization available. Name a bad movie from the early 80’s that kids wanted to see that was rated R and I read the book. Odds are, in those cases the books were better.  This week has the movie novelization for War For The Planet of the Apes out. It’s got all of the end of the world mechanics in place, minus the state of the art motion capture work.

Ducktales

Ducktales is coming to Disney XD! Ducktales-don’t you miss that theme song? Disney Ducktales is being brought back to comic books by IDW and this week has the series starting with #0. This is an all new story that is easier to read and has more punch than the existing IDW Disney duck series. Get your Ducktales on, the water is fine and hum along to the song in your mind.

The music in the podcast is from Parvus Decree.

National Geographic Kids sets their 10th Guinness World Record

This is a sponsored post-all thoughts are our own. Do you remember all of those toilet paper rolls that were sent to the offices of National Geographic Kids in the spring? The rolls have been tallied, glued and taped to create the World’s Largest Toilet Paper Roll Sculpture. It’s in the shape of a rocket and was put together in Washington D.C. at the offices of National Geographic Kids.

We Are The Dinosaurs is picture book magic for 6 and under

Do you or the kids watch Dinotrux? Its transition from solely being a book to also include television was seamless. Of course a show about trucks as dinosaurs going about their life is entertaining you say now. It might not have thought like that initially though. This is much like the classic song from Laurie Berkner, We Are The Dinosaurs. Unless you’ve had a child go through pre-K in the past 20 years that song doesn’t mean anything to you. However, if you’ve seen your kids stomp, march and roar then it’s probably one of your favorite memories of their school play. Whaddaya think of that?

We Are The Dinosaurs is now a book by Laurie Berkner with illustrations by Ben Clanton and it has a lot going for it. For starters it’s got a built in audience of young readers who know the words and love dinosaurs.

The all age comics that are part of Free Comic Book Day

The other day I was the guest reader at our son’s elementary school. As usual, I brought in a couple of comic books for those kids that wanted to read on their own. Before I left the room I told the kids that this Saturday was Free Comic Book Day and that it was a chance to pick up free comic books at their local store. I blew their minds. The kids lit up like the fourth of July and I was backed up by the fact that the teacher knew where our closest comic book store was located.

Rugrats-finally on DVD giveaway, 26 years on they age well

Way back in 1991 Rugrats debuted on Nickelodeon. It forever changed television and became one of the go-to cartoons for millennials. Now Rugrats Season 1 and Season 2 are finally available on DVD. Our children had never seen an episode of Rugrats and immediately resonated with the characters.

One difference between Rugrats and some of the shows that they watch now is that Rugrats has heart and emotion. It is certainly a comedy, but it never forgets the family or the struggles that really small children go through. Sure Tommy was a toddler, but the way he communicated and his interpersonal relationships seemed older. That aspect allowed him to connect with viewers who are older, which is rare for shows today. Today’s shows often have characters acting older than what they really are. Actually enjoying a show where older kids are watching a show about babies-and it’s entertaining is rare indeed.

Another bonus is the cost of the Rugrats DVDs. Season 1 has 26 episodes for 316 minutes on two discs at $14.99. Season 2 is spread out over four discs, 657 minutes of content and 56 episodes for $19.99. That is a great bang for the buck when compared to some newer releases that might retail for that same price but only have 6 episodes. If you don’t win then you can purchase them on DVD when they go on sale May 2.

Hilda and The Stone Forest is timeless, top tier book/graphic novel

For us, Hilda and The Stone Forest is like meeting someone for the first time who we’ve seen at parties and seems really cool. Then, when you meet them, you realize that they are even nicer and cooler than you thought they were and you kick yourself for not meeting them earlier. I’ve read a couple of short Hilda stories that were printed on Free Comic Book Day and did like them, but simply never got around to reading one of Luke Pearson’s books. That’s worth noting because there are some existing characteristics and story elements to Hilda, but they are not necessary to know to fully enjoy The Stone Forest.

The first thing that will grab reader’s attention is the art by Luke Pearson. Once you see Hilda you will not forget her. She’s immediately memorable and Trolberg, the world where she lives is rich with detail, various sized creatures and a European landscape that makes you want to be a resident there. Each page has art that feels like a comic strip, but is laid out with various sized panels and illustrations. Some of these even overlap each other so as to give the reader momentum as the story progresses. This effect also enhances the creativity and sense of wonder that Hilda has in engaging with her adventures.

The Nalgene Marvel Collection makes drinking water super

“Mommy, now I have a water bottle just like you” is what our 7 year old said. It made her feel all warm and fuzzy because it was an identifying and bonding moment that those two shared. For us it was more about super hero street cred. His Nalgene Captain America bottle from the Marvel Collection can accommodate 32 ounces of water for those hikes, bike trips or simply playing in the back yard.

When I was a kid finding cool Marvel stuff was challenging. There was this one kid who always seemed to have cool Marvel clothing, but I suspect his parents were on the Comic Con curve before the rest of us. Uphill both ways, that’s the lesson for our children.
