They Had A Dream, black American history for YA

Jules Archer is apparently quite the force in non-fiction books for young people. During his lifetime he published over 70 books. We read Jungle Fighters recently and loved it. The way that Archer presented the story of defending New Guinea  was approachable and one that young readers could latch onto. With They Had A Dream he writes about four influential leaders of the civil rights movement. Frederick Douglas, Marcus Garvey, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X are written about in this engaging and accessible book.

Reading Reconsidered, literacy instruction for teachers and parents

I’m a teacher. Once you’ve worked as a teacher you’re always a teacher. When my wife and I became parents we immediately started reading to our children. We also did the other parenting tropes like playing classical music, labeling key things in the house and saying Jumanji to make the dirty diapers disappear. Unfortunately that last one never did work. It’s in the vein of my prior profession that I wanted to read Reading Reconsidered.

Hatched, a movie that was better off in the shell

Families want, and sometimes need entertainment. It’s obviously best if said entertainment is OK for everyone in the family. It’s in that spirit that Hatched is available on DVD. Hatched is a film that will most likely rocket to the bottom of your DVD stack. Unless you’re 6 years old and this is the second movie you’ve see it’s most likely the worst animated film that you’ve seen.

What a fun week for all age comics. #4 of Zodiac Starforce comes out. This is great for the girls who want to see action, battles, learn about teamwork and good fun. It also sounds like the name of a roller rink circa 1976. There are a couple Turtle titles including a $1 greatest hits that is great for people who want to learn about them or dig a classic story.

Jungle Fighters is first hand WW II history for tweens and up

Non-fiction can be a tough subject for younger readers to grasp. The subject matter may not be interesting, the text could be written in a way that doesn’t appeal to them or the content requires background information in order to comprehend what they’re reading. Originally published in 1985, Jungle Fighters: A Firsthand Account of the Forgotten New Guinea Campaign by Jules Archer is a great book for ages 12 and up because it deals with the a complex and brutal time in history in a way that young readers can digest.

That’s (Not) Mine is instant fun for all (ages)

Some books that we read take a moment for their cuteness to be realized. Other books are immediately catchy, ones that can be read on many levels and have artwork that adds to the experience. That’s (Not) Mine is easily in the second category.  This second book from Anna Kang with illustrations by Christopher Weyant features the same characters from I Am (Not) Small and delivers belly laughs to children 7 and younger.

The Superbowl Sunday Collectors Con in Atlanta, Feb 7

Cons are good.  The Superbowl Sunday Collectors Con in Atlanta is a great low-key con for collectors and fans to get their fun on during a normally slow winter month. I say ‘low-key’ con because it’s one day, has a really low entry (only $5!), some fabulous comic artists (with no signing fee!) and they’re giving away $2,000 in merchandise at 3:00. It’s being held at Atlanta Marriott-Century Center Hotel from 11-5 on February 7.
