New all age comics for February 24, 2016

There is a certain ‘classic’ vibe about this week’s all age comics. It’s classic, but not stale or musty smelling, it’s the names that you know, but with new stories that can hook new audiences and keep the folks that know the characters from back in the day. This is the week that may parents can take their kids to the comic book store and purchase many of the same names that they knew, as well as, lots of great modern titles that are brand new to them too.

Itty Bitty Hellboy: The Search for the Were-Jaguar #4 is great. This is the all ages version of the great hero Hellboy, the art is goofy, surreal and utterly OK for any aged reader. In humor this week, Donald Duck, Futurama Comics, Peanuts and Mad Magazine are out. Yes, Mad Magazine, at just under $5 this is the same, slightly crude humor that you laughed at and didn’t understand when you were 8 years old and hanging out in your friend’s tree house. The only difference now is that you understand all of the jokes and references. Kids 12 and up will be able to jump right into Mad Magazine and LOL with the best of them.

Back to the Future #5, Kaijumax trade paperback Volume 1, Transformers, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and lots of other comics come out that are great for the all age sci-fi fan also.

In fantasy, older readers will want to check out Mezolith original graphic novel, Vol. 1. It’s 10,000 years ago and this book follows a tribe of hunters in stone age Great Britain. This will be too violent for younger readers, but kids 12 and up will love the art in this just released book on this side of the pond.

Call it an entry paper offering to origami. Squirrel King Craft Kits are a series of crafts that don’t require any glue and create something whimsical. The end goal is permanent because you’re using stickers, so bend and stick carefully. However, for children (mainly girls in this case) who want to create something with their hands in a truly organic way, this is the ticket.

Win tickets to Harlem Globetrotters in Atlanta

As a child I vaguely remember seeing the Harlem Globetrotters perform. I recall knowing that Meadowlark Lemon was the stuff of legend. His hook shot, penchant for a massive smile while running the court and making a ‘show’ out of a basketball game was on par to a pop star dancing, singing and choreographing their entire concert, but with a moving target and an outcome that was undecided. Toss in Curly and the rest of the guys and you can tell that I saw them last in the 70’s. The Harlem Globetrotters turn 90 in 2016 and are touring. Family friendly, check. Legends that your children will remember decades from now, check. To some parents Yo-Kai Watch is Greek. it’s that foreign thing that kids dig but parents can’t tell their Yo-Kai from their spectral anomalies. In actuality, Yo-Kai Watch isn’t Greek at all, it’s Japanese. It’s an anime show that took Japan by storm and is now in the U.S. As go the shows, so go the toys and the Yo-Kai Watch toys from Hasbro are here, full of imagination based play-with a touch of collection, mischief and giggles.

The Summer Academy Camps at UGA, real fun for middle and high students

We were compensated for this post. All thoughts are our own and education rocks. Fractals are not something that Jim Henson created in the 80’s. Our 6 year old just started learning about fractals. I’ve been calling a fractal a Rorschach Test for ages, so his kindergarten teacher just taught me something too. Summer camp has come a long way since I was a kid also. Now summer camps teach real skills that kids can apply to subjects they’re curious about or things that they want to become; a great example of these are the Summer Academy Camps at UGA.

New comic book day this week yields a really good crop of fantasy comics including two Jim Henson creations, Princeless Raven Pirate Princess and Usagi Yojimbo. That last title is one of our favorites for people that are looking for a low key, black and white, utterly creative and fun title about a ninja rabbit in feudal Japan.

There are also lots of staple humor titles like Lumberjanes, Simpsons Comics and Adventure Time. Science fiction is loaded down with two Doctor Whos, 11^th and 10^th Doctor thank you very much, our 6 year old’s favorite comic-Skylanders Superchargers, a Star Wars and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trade paperback that’s just for the kids.

With superheroes this week the go-to name for most people is released. Teen Titans Go! #14 comes out and this title is just like the cartoon, in a good way.

Your closest comic book store is as close as your keyboard. Just punch in your zip code to the comic book store locator and you’ll all but be beamed over there. For the internet folks just dig into the links and save up to 20% from TFAW.

The Smurfs on Nintendo 3DS, Smurfing good gaming fun

Hey, we received a copy of the game for review, all thoughts are our own. No Smurfing way. Your favorite friendly blue characters have found themselves in a predicament. They’ve gone for a walk in the forest only to come back and find their entire village destroyed! All of their trademark mushroom houses are reduced to ripped up fungi, as well as the scaled down tables, chairs and everything else. Thankfully they live in a forest where the Smurfs can go out and gather wood, rocks and other materials to build it all again. Or rather, you can rebuild Smurf village and hopefully find out who smashed it all to bits.
