All age comic books for July 4

And a Happy July 4^th to you if you’re in the U.S.; plus a belated Canada Day to our friends up there. We also wish the cat meme of your choice if you’re reading this from elsewhere, now on with the new all age comic books for the week of July 4. Is your local comic book store open on July 4^th? I don’t know, but check out Comic Book Store Locator, type in your zip code and you can contact them to check into that.

Over in the podcast we’ll chat about Hilda and the Stone Forest, a slew of Disney and DC books and a classic series of books that never go out of style with a new one this week. All of these are some of the top all age comic books for the week of July 4. In addition to that, check out these three, some of which are great for ages 5 and up.

Disney PIXAR Incredibles 2 one-shot

Have you seen Incredibles 2 yet? It’s a very good movie and proves that sequels to great PIXAR films can stand alone, even years after the first one, as worthy films that are entertaining and don’t feel like a rip off. Disney PIXAR and Joe Books take that good mojo off of the screen and into a one-shot comic book that is great for all ages. This concentrates on the family aspect of the Incredibles, expect lots of Jack-Jack, family humor and superhero action. It’ll be great for ages 5 and up, but those younger ages will need help reading the content.

True Believers Fantastic Four Coming of Galactus

True Believers is a series of comics that Marvel Comics puts out that reprints classic issues from their catalogue. Some of these issues are classics, like from the 60’s, while others are new classics like ones from the 90’s. The Coming of Galactus is an issue from the early 60’s that features Galactus and the FF. The kicker is that it’s only $1 and the content is great for any age as long as they like action. There is some reading, so younger ages won’t be able to read it without help, but they’ll love looking at the classic art.

Ghoul Scouts, I Was a Teenage Werewolf!

From the title Ghoul Scouts to the setting of this mini-series, Camp Lake Crystal, older readers know that their tongue should be fully in cheek. However, younger readers will be fully enthralled in this just-scary-enough mini-series from Action Lab Entertainment. Ghoul Scouts features five teens as they fight zombies and monsters, all the while navigating the difficult task of being a teenager and being in their home town. This is fun stuff that ages 8 and up will enjoy and parents can rest easy knowing that the content is OK too.

Perfectly Norman is just about that in a children’s book

Children are fascinating creatures who are impossible to understand. They have secrets, friendships that are needlessly complex and make small matters seem like mountains that they’ll never be able to overcome. In short, children are just like us, except a couple decades younger and can text faster than you. Perfectly Norman by Tom Percival is a children’s book that perfectly encapsulates an element of what being a kids is like. It’s their belief that nobody is like me. We Don’t Eat Our Classmates, fabulous allegory and all

Penelope Rex is at a crossroads. She’s about to go to school and it’s a bit time change. Either she’s going into kindergarten or first grade; it’s one of those landmark years in early elementary school. She’s quite worried about making friends in her class and how they’ll treat her, given that she’s a T. Rex. We Don’t Eat Our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins is laugh-out-loud comfort food for readers 4-8. This is the kind of book that parents don’t mind reading more than once. It’s a great-good-night book and one that will make it through to the grandchildren’s library in 20 years or so.

The plot to Hotel Transylvania 3 finds Drac in dire need of a vacation. They find a cruise that’s tailored to the monster set and the Drac Pack take part in all sorts of cruise ship shenanigans. Think of a parlor contest, ship-going on game and one of the monsters that you or your kids have loved in the first two movies are in there having fun. Everything seems to be going too well and sure enough there just might be a dark, hidden agenda for the cruise that they don’t know about yet.

Hotel Transylvania 3 comes out in movie theaters on July 13. This giveaway is for a 4-pack of tickets to the Atlanta sneak preview on 11:00 AM. It’s at a theater in Roswell, about 15 minutes north of Atlanta. The winners will be emailed links to the tickets so that they can claim them, as well as, more specific information.

When Hotel Transylvania came out in theaters I wasn’t impressed. However, at the time I saw it by myself as the boys were too young to sit through a complete movie. By the time the second one came out our oldest was screaming at me to go see it and we did. He laughed hysterically through it and the experience was a joy for me to see him so happy. By the time that film was available to stream his younger brother saw it and they both watched it whilst doubled over with laughter.

Hotel Transylvania 3 comes out to movie theaters on July 13. Drac takes the show on the road as he and the gang go on a cruise. Everything is going swimmingly….or is it? If you liked the first one or the second one it looks like you can expect to enjoy this one, especially the kids. This is the film that they’ve talked about the most since the end of school. Our boys and their friends and chomping at the bit to see this one when it comes out in theaters and are eager to see what Drac does on vaca.

It’s new comic book day and this week is light on all age comic books. There are a couple great books and some cool graphic novels that are brand new. In the podcast we’ll talk about a great new graphic novel for elementary school and up from Scholastic, a Marvel book that skews even younger, Catsronauts and much more. For now though let’s look at three all age comic books that will interest ages 5 and up.

Future Quest Presents #11

Future Quest Presents is a great ongoing series from DC Comics that is made of a continuous mini-series of sorts. The common thread is Hanna-Barbera and their stock characters. Some of them aren’t household names, but that doesn’t matter as the stories are jammed with action and fun. In Future Quest Presents #11 we catch up with Dorno of the Herculoids. It’s OK if you don’t know him, by the time you get a couple pages in you’ll want more of the vibe that this comic book has throughout. This is great for ages 9 and up, just because of the amount of reading that’s required to really enjoys it.

Lumberjanes #51

Should Lumberjanes be in the humor or science-fiction category? That question’s answer varies due to what issue we’re discussing. They can range from flat out summer camp funny to science-fiction tomfoolery as they chase monsters in the forest. This monthly comic book series is one of the go-to all age comic books that people can read. Each issue is fabulous, with a side order of friendship.

Sonic the Hedgehog #6

Catch the train, the Sonic the Hedgehog train that Dr. Eggman is desperately trying to hijack. This comic book is great and produces sold out issues, which then require second or even third printings. The magic of Tracy Yardley is in full effect here and is one of those all age comic books with action, humor and a built in audience that kids 5 and up will enjoy.

Summer, A Pop-Up Book brings home the 3D fun for three and up

As a kid we loved pop-up books. We had one that was King Arthur themed. As you turned each page the castle would raise up, goblets would move to the mouths of thirsty knights and fair maiden’s hair would creep down the castle walls so rescuers could climb them. Yeah, that last one always made me question the legitimacy of the Renaissance too. Thankfully, Summer offers no such questions. Instead it’s a rip fun time that’s consistent with Spring, Fall or Winter, the other books in the series by David A. Carter.

It’s new comic book day and this week has something for every age reader. This is also that very special week when most of our favorite all age comic books come out. We’ll cover all of those books in the podcast. However, one of those books is highlighted in our top three all age comic books below

Spongebob Comics Annual Giant Swimtacular

Last week the monthly issue of Spongebob Comics came out, it was awesome. This week has Spongebob Comics Annual Giant Swimtacular #6 out. If you’re an older, possibly dubious fan of comic books then these one-off comic books might have a bad taste in your mouth. For some comic books that’s entirely possible, but this summer series from Spongebob Comics is new, fresh and cleans that taste out with new tales from under the sea. This is funny, tongue in cheek stuff that both of our boys have loved since they were 6 and I read it at night when they’re done. If you’re faith in all age comic books need reassurance, check out this one.

Steven Universe Ongoing #17

If you know of a kid who watches Steven Universe and really gets it, then it’s highly probably that they’re in middle or high school. This is a funny show that’s observational, a little dry and has enough action to bring along some boys who otherwise wouldn’t be attached to it. The comic book is similar to that and is great fun. In Steven Universe Ongoing #17 we see Steven and Peridot playing video games and she takes things too far. Readers aged 11 and up will be able to read this and get the most out of the comic.

Disney Tangled The Series Graphic Novel,The Write Story

If you’re a girl reader in second through sixth grade this is your jam. This is an ongoing series of original graphic novels featuring the characters from Tangled. The second one is called The Write Story and Rapunzel freaking out because she’s about to meet her favorite author. Factor in that the king embellishes Rapunzel’s life when they want to write a book about her and tall tales will rule the day. This is a funny, original graphic novel that will make kids who don’t want to read actually read. Sure there are lots of pictures, but this is gateway stuff that will give them the reading bug.
