When I was 13 or so I went to the drug store to buy some condoms. A group of guys dared me to do it because I was the ‘craziest’ and ‘would do anything’. I was nervous when I bought the condoms and forgot what we did with them afterwards. I think I just peddled off on my Huffy, went to a friend’s house and read comic books in their tree house. The Starbucks #VIA Moment Instagram contest #Spon
I do like my caffeine. Most of the time it’s iced, sometimes it’s hot, but it’s always caffeine and somehow, magically makes the day become 5:00 so much quicker. As a stay at home dad these moments have to be timed and need to happen during the late morning or early afternoon for me to make it to the finish line. Starbucks and Life of Dad have teamed up on a groovy contest to highlight how important coffee can be to us all. Continue reading The Starbucks #VIA Moment Instagram contest #Spon
Lessons that children can learn from the garden #Sponsored
I remember the first time I discovered that you could have an herb garden at your house. It was in the Italian Mediterranean, near the mountain principality of Seborga. One of my friends casually mentioned that he was going outside to get some fresh basil for the pasta. Woah, you can just go out and pick basil-you Italians have it going on, I thought to myself.
Of course, since then I’ve planted herb gardens of my own and have been quite successful at it. Now that I have a child who’s old enough to help I’ve discovered a couple of ways that they can genuinely help out. I wrote an article for the SC Johnson Green Choices blog on the 5 things that your young child can learn from the herb garden.

The Skil 360 Quick Select- fun to use & unlike any drill you own-Giveaway
It’s great when common and accepted devices undergo radical changes. The T-handle handheld screwdrivers were like that when we first got them. The Skil 360 Quick Select has some of the most subtle, yet radical changes to a power screw driver that you’ll ever see. The 12 bits are inside a revolving chamber, the device can be charged via a USB port and it has a light to guide you as you’re screwing something in or out. Literally all you need is Twiki from Buck Rogers to come out and start doing your work for you, but then you’d get all distracted by Erin Gray and you’ve got work to do, so hop to it. Continue reading The Skil 360 Quick Select- fun to use & unlike any drill you own-Giveaway
Elysium: moments of excellence, but empty at the same time
Elysium is the follow up movie by Neill Blomkamp who directed the incredible District 9. Elysium is not a sequel to District 9, but does have some of the same themes. The rigid class system, divide between rich and poor and spectacularly sublime special effects are all present in both films. Elysium has high aspirations and does go higher than most sci-fi films; but doesn’t reach ‘classic’ status because of the frequent moments that it takes its foot off of the accelerator. Continue reading Elysium: moments of excellence, but empty at the same time
Disney’s Planes aims low and hits the safe target
Disney’s Planes is the story of a crop duster that desperately wants to be a racing plane. It was produced by Disney Toon Studios and originally meant to go straight to DVD. Don’t let the fact that it was intended to by-pass theaters put you off from seeing it. Disney’s Planes makes it clear that this is from the world of Cars. There are hints of the wonder and enjoyment from that first movie, but the soul of Planes is strictly with its sequel. Continue reading Disney’s Planes aims low and hits the safe target
