Too Much Coffee Man Favorites #3 is gleefully manic

Somewhere aligned with the single pane of The Far Side and the four panes of Life in Hell sits Too Much Coffee Man.  The nonlinear humor in Too Much Coffee Man is similar to Far Side, yet it has the same recurring characters, much like Life in Hell.  Is Too Much Coffee Man funny?  You bet, it was one of the first independent comics I purchased in the early 2000’s and still packs buckets of wit with sublime, detailed illustrations. Our family lessons learned between the first and second child

Our youngest will turn 2 years old in a couple of months.  The cliché that the time flies by is every so true.  You can’t believe they were ever that small and so forth.  The bending of time that happens after the second child is born is quick, you blink and suddenly they’re 2 years old.  If I could talk to myself a couple of months before our second child arrived here is a list of things that I would suggest. The Conjuring, very scary thrills-and a great film

Rare are scary films that are good.  More often than not it’s just violence, creative (sick) ways to murder and most recently torture porn.  The “Saw” type movies that were popular in the mid 00’s weren’t really scary, just had moments of tension.  The “found footage” movies that were trendy after that weren’t scary either, just mildly surprising.  The Conjuring is a throwback movie that is genuinely scary-without being bloody, has strong characters and succeeds in going past the genre and actually being a great film.    Continue reading The Conjuring, very scary thrills-and a great film

Family travel along the Georgia coast: short cuts, a petting zoo & The Wiregrass Trail

The Georgia coast has some really pretty beaches.  While Hilton Head is technically in South Carolina, you’re probably driving there via I-16 and Savannah.  I-16 is the interstate road that you get from Macon/I-75.  About two hours outside of Savannah look for exit 98.  If you’re headed to the South Georgia coast area of Jeckyll Island/St. Simmons Island or north to Savannah/Hilton Head; exit 98 can save you time or provide a needed break for families with kids. Floating Bunnyhead #1 is a weird, creative comic book 15+ will dig

From its title, Floating Bunnyhead could be thought of as a comic book that’s OK for young readers.  Once you dig into Floating Bunnyhead you realize that it has more in common with South Park and to an extent, The Simpsons.  Think Aqua Teen Hunger Force and you get an idea of the humor and subject matter of Floating Bunnyhead.  This comic book is not appropriate for young readers, but it is fabulous, creative, weird fun that teens and up will enjoy.  Continue reading Floating Bunnyhead #1 is a weird, creative comic book 15+ will dig

Shimmer & Splash: a fishy look at the sea life that children will like

We just got back from a visit to the beach.  There were six children on the trip between ages 1 to 12.  On the beach the middle to older ones had buckets of questions about sea creatures.  “Something stung me-I think it was a jellyfish”.  “Is that a fin out there? I wonder if it’s a shark or a dolphin?  If your child is between 6 to 12 and have questions about sea life Shimmer & Splash is a good jumping off point. Pacific Rim: quality film plus an old soul with monsters & robots

Pacific Rim is a movie that I didn’t want to like.  “Hurry up and make HellBoy 3 Gulliermo Del Toro, why are you messing around with Pacific Rim?”, my inner fanboy said a couple years ago.  Now that I’ve seen Pacific Rim I’m eating my words to an extent because it is great fun, still has aspects of what makes all of Del Toro’s movies great, except with a much bigger budget.
