How to go shrimp fishing in Hilton Head Island

The kids wanted to see sea life. A ‘sea cruise’ for me sounds kind of boring. What to do in Hilton Head when the family want to spend a couple hours on the water, perhaps see some sea life and maybe, just maybe catch a couple pounds of fresh shrimp? It was an unexpected answer for us that turned out to be one of the more memorable times during our vacation. The Tammy Jane operates its shrimping expeditions from May through mid-January each year and combined something for everyone in our group.

Our trip on the Tammy Jane Shrimp Trawler was entertaining and provided dinner

Dragon Con, comic book artists, STEM, Kid’s Track-oh my

“But we don’t dress up”, I need a button that says that when our neighbors ask us about Dragon Con. As a family, Dragon Con gets more and more entertaining every year we go.  Dragon Con happens in Atlanta over Labor Day every year. It is also family friendly. Our neighbors give us a side-eye when we say that also. All one needs to do is walk around downtown Atlanta when Dragon Con is happening and you’ll see hundreds of children accompanying their parents. This is a massively fun time for kids and families who have the right mindset.

Dragon Con continues to exceed expectations. In 2019 they upped their comic book artists, held the STEM steady and continued the Kid’s Track for 12 and under.

By the right mindset I mean, be OK with crowds. Over 85,000 people attended Dragon Con in 2019. It’s crowded everywhere you go. What’s amazing is that, despite its massive size and crowd the lines are constantly moving. Another mind boggling fact is that the vast majority of people you’ll encounter are chilled out.

OFF!® Insect Repellents Makes Mosquitoes and Other Flying Pests Go!

This is a sponsored post by SC Johnson. All opinions are my own. Before I was an outdoor guy I was an outdoor kid. I remember always having a can of OFF!® Insect Repellent at the ready as our scout troop went out. I grew up in North Carolina, where the mosquitoes are pedestrian when compared to other parts of the country. As a family we’ve vacationed in northern Michigan where it’s an entirely different class of flying annoyances. Regardless of where you vacation, the battle to keep mosquitoes off, as well as, other small bugs at bay is as close as the sporting goods section at your local Walmart.

Wilderness at the Smokies indoor waterpark exceeded every expectation

We were provided with a night’s accommodation, all thoughts are our own. It was a surprise trip to Wilderness at the Smokies with the family and the boys were ecstatic. They knew that it was a waterpark with all manner of slides and other water oriented fun, but they also knew that the pools around us weren’t open for the season. Going swimming when you’re cold is not any fun is what they must have been thinking inside their growing minds. I quickly reassured them that Wilderness at the Smokies is Tennessee’s Largest Indoor Waterpark and that all of the fun we’d be having on this trip was inside. Their minds were all but blown away and after the trip my wife and I both agreed that our experience there far exceeded our expectations on all fronts.

Contest of Champions, in my backyard-with scaled down Hulk and Thor

Because Sakaar is too far away to get to in a timely manner, we had our own Contest of Champions in the backyard. In a perfect world the Grandmaster would be there to emcee and/or pardon some in the crowd. However, until that’s an option we had the kids play in the back yard while I organized the Backyard Games Contest. The best part for parents is that these games are all but free and can be done using things that you’ve already got, or will soon receive like boxes in the mail.

Two holiday season must-sees on Netflix

We’re part of the Stream Team for Netflix and were compensated for this. All thoughts are our own. The Christmas season snuck up on us again this year. It really shouldn’t sneak up as it’s the same time line every year, but it somehow does. One element of the ‘sneak’ is that the family didn’t have enough time to watch some of our go-to Christmas movies. Now that the kids are older they actively enjoy some films and are old enough to know what they like. One such series of films, The Santa Clause, is back on Netflix and they’re good enough to watch anytime of the year.

Ride The Rails is can’t-miss railroad fundraising fun in North Georgia

Ride The Rails is a fundraiser for Tri-State Model Railroaders and the Historic Bluff Depot. I didn’t know either of those organizations either. However, what I do know is that kids love trains. At my core, I love trains too. I had model trains when I was a kid, rode the train across Russia for seven days and still enjoy riding the subway. Ride The Rails is just the thing that kids will want to do and see.

The fundraiser takes place Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21 from 10-3 at the Historic Bluff Depot in Mineral Bluff, Georgia.  From Atlanta the drive is one hour and forty five minutes away. However, sixty miles into the drive it becomes wooded, with rolling hills, farms along the way and is very pleasant with many optional side trips.

If My Love Were A Fire Truck, gets dad love and more

In the kid lit book world it’s a thin line between sappy dad love and over the top machismo. Usually it’s the stereotype of a well intentioned dad trying to fix something that goes astray. It’s a close relative to the dumb dad that advertisers used to rely on far too much. If My Love Were A Fire Truck by Luke Reynolds with illustrations by Jeff Mack is children’s book that straddles that line with ease. It shows the father figure in the book doing all manner of activities with his son, albeit in his imagination.

With Father’s Day coming up one expects to see more than a couple children’s books aimed at dads. Some will succeed merely because they cater to dudes, while others will have heart, in addition to being able to be read by moms too.
